Well gang, I just had to post about this because this subject has been on my mind for a while...
Earlier this week,I decided to pay a visit to one of our local Hobbytown stores. Not only did it bother me that they dropped "USA" from their signage, but it also bothers me that they are charging full blown retail,or MSRP for their model kits!!! This has been going on for a while there, too.I have been buying there for years.I like the owners so much that I have bought from them just to give them the business, instead of buying said new release online. So,here is the example that I'll give to you all regarding the new release posted below: The new kit example above that is listed currently on EBAY would be shipped to my door for $29.16. You know how much Hobbytown wants? It is $33 plus tax!!!! AND it was a "special order",and none had been ordered to that point.I mentioned to the cashier that I would love to buy it there instead of online, although I didn't tell him that the special order "factor", and full blown retail lost the sale there for me.I feel horrible, but I feel that is what our hobby is coming to....mail order over local hobby shop purchases.I still plan on getting paints/detail stuff there, but I doubt I'll ever buy kits there again. As sad as that is to say,it's so true for me right now!!!
Feel free to share your views on this "Hobby Shop Talk".....I would love to hear how you feel about it.

I think its the same all over. We have only one hobby shop anywhere near me (and they know it) , and they have been in business since before I was born ( I still have a $1.00 gift certificate they sent my mother when I was born ! ). They have a massive amount of kits and supplies, which is pretty cool , but they have always been expensive . Most kits like the reissues, are all in the $30.00+ range, which is out of my range for a new kit .He also asks twice the price for his slot cars ,and I would imagine everything else that I'm not into. I used to think it was because we had a local navy base with bored sailors and big paychecks, but now I see many people complaining about there shops too. I'm have a limited budget , so its basically the best deal gets my business. If its online, then so be it. I'd like to support my local shop, but I cant spend the extra cash when I can get it cheaper elsewhere .

Down here your garden variety 1/24-25 kit is $50 AUD.I was in Sydney's oldest & most regarded hobby shop 'HOBBYCO' a week ago for the 1st.time this century & was amazed at how much I'd saved by not going to a retail store, cars or military it was 2 plus for the price of 1 when buying on-line.The shop I used to go to for vintage, hard to find stuff knew what their kits were worth & charged accordingly,so going on-line was the only option, there is a bit of guilt, but that usually offsets itself against the satisfaction of hunting, finding & having it delivered for a quarter of the cost.It may all sound a bit selfish, but 'knowing' there's a %400 mark-up on goods by the time they hit the shelf buffers that guilt?

So,I decided to revisit this thread....Our local Hobbytown Kit prices are too high, but they massively scaled down their selection of kits. They shrunk it to about half its original size.Their selection is piss poor, and even the discounted kits suck!!!! The owner is never there when I go,and he seems to be making it an RC store.... I know it's what has kept him in business, but it's not the only hobby....even the train section is disappointing!!!! It's a good thing he wasn't there....I'm usually easy going, but I would have given him some "feedback" on behalf of our model building "niche " group in our small hobby corner of the world that he wouldn't have forgotten any time soon!!!
There,I am done venting about it (for now!).

...same here, when the local hobby shop renovated they put a huge RC track in the back of the shop for 'test drives?' & truncated the kit section down to 3/4 of an aisle from 4.I really don't know what their thinking other than to phase out the hobby all together? "United We stand, divided We aren't too close & it doesn't feel weird!"

Ours still has a large area for kits, but they RC stuff has taken over a good chunk of the store and they hired one guy who is an RC guru to work there. He's a nice guy, but don't ask him anything about paint or models !
