an old man died Christmas just gone,a Millionaires Death. After spending a Beautiful Christmas Day,mostly lucid, with Friends & Relos’,having the onset of dementia to look forward to He went for an afternoon nap on Boxing Day & shuffled off this Mortal Coil.I didn’t know the Old Fella’,but by ALL accounts He was a Decent Man.
That’s the Lovely part of this story.......
....He built wooden model boats, you know the ones? 3ft.long,rigging up the ying-yang,clets,cannons...the works. He also dabbled in large planes,4ft.wing spans, not RC stuff, blueprint scaled down nightmares,I saw photos of a Spitfire & a P51-B Mustang. The Widow has since given them to family members & She kept one ship. NOW.....there’s this 1/8 blueprint version of the Fokker DR1,the Red Barron’s Tri-winged plane, half built,no one wants “...& for my sins...they gave me one". (Apocalypse Now)
His dementia had started to kick-in when He began this project,so it was left, this thing is so God damned involved, laser cut 2mm plywood sheeting, dozens upon dozens of of varying sized balsa and lime wood ‘sticks’?,spars, all the mechanical parts are die-cast ali’ including a magnificent radial engine, the 100 magazines He bought from the newsagent religiously & a component with each edition,I found a couple of price tags & figured this must have cost close to $2000.If you look on ebay,Hasagawa must have gotten their hands on the ‘rights’ to re-produce it,as this was a Pommy produced thing back in ’06,no syrene, just timber & metal, the new one has substituted plastic for some/all? Of the plane & the Princely sum of $700+ depending.
Now I’ve laid it ALL out on a door in the spare room, now there’s no spare room in the spare room & I’ve been drawn into finishing this off out of sheer amazement, the Fiat’s not been neglected,I’m wondering how many balls I can keep in the air? I’ll get some photos together soon.
They say you shouldn’t wish for something to hard & I know why now,it leaves bruises!
